This is an interesting time in emulation. We're right at the cusp of having hardware and software that's fast enough to emulate, for instance, VAXen as fast as or faster than the fastest hardware ever made, with the Apple M1.

We're close to being able to emulate an m68k with MMU as fast as a real m68060, but with x86, we weren't quite there yet.

With more and better emulations available, we see more people able to improve code quality because it's much easier to test alternative architectures.

Between AXPbox and qemu in the last year, Alpha emulation is progressing nicely, although I'm sure it'll be a while before emulation is anywhere near the speed of my real AlphaServer DS25...

AlphaVM is also another commercial product that I’ve seen used in production. There used to be a free tier but unfortunately its not available anymore.
