I find the idea of simply not knowing¹ forty years later really quite disturbing.

Jokes apart. Given the geomagnetic field sometimes "flip" over, what would happen with the anomaly? Would it accordingly flip to the sea between the Philippines and Japan?

Wasn’t one explanation is that it’s part of the remnants of the planet Theia. Fragments of the other mantle are jutting up from our mantle.

Curiously, the [Large low-shear-velocity provinces](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_low-shear-velocity_provi...) (what I think you're referring to) are actually on the African and Pacific rather than where the South Atlantic Anomaly falls.
